Yankees Radio: Worse Than Jersey Traffic
Yankees haters are always trying to get me to admit something. Admit this, admit that, they plead, as they poke small holes into what is easily the most consistently successful American sports franchise. Well, here's something Bombers fans will readily admit: listening to a Yankees radio broadcast on WCBS 880 is pure torture.

I had the displeasure of suffering through Sunday's broadcast while stuck in Hudson-crossing traffic. It was worse than being cut off by a fleet of Camaros, even on a day when Suzyn Waldman announced the most promising news of the season, that Roger Clemens — having apparently spent enough time with his family — was returning to the Bronx.

Listen to her orgasmic excitement, if you dare.

Waldman was over-dramatic and homerific to a point of being laughable, a staple of Yankees broadcasts that feature enough in-game sponsor plugs to make the entire production a joke. On Monday, John Sterling read a Benihana promo during a Hideki Matsui at-bat. Between pitches, for god's sake, they're pimping meals related to the nationality of the batter.

I understand that the money for guys like Clemens has to come from somewhere, but the Yankees have got to be able to compete without ruining their own radio broadcasts.

Oh, the Benihana thing has been going on for years. They also have every single replay sponsored in the post-game, which is also gross.

As for Suzyn's freak out, she's a paid Yankee shill just like the YES guys. Seriously, between her and Michael Kay frothing at the mouth over this, you'd think Roger could heal the blind to see, but my guess is they have to react like that or get blasted later. Which is also gross.

Yankees radio is pathetic. I have MLB radio, and always listen to the other team's announcers. The Yanks should have nothing but the best, but the duo of Streling and Waldman is laughably horrible. I grew up listening to the great Ernie Harwell here in the Midwest. I guess I'm spoiled.

I don't want to be a naysayer, but I think they are fine. The only caveat is that I had to listen to Ron Fairly announce for the Mariners for years. That dude would preface all comments with his days in the Dodger's that was tough to get through, like nails down the chalkboard.

Really, you think they're fine?

I would like to see how they'd do without the incessant in-game promos. The lineups, the pitching changes, the double plays, all brought to you by Company A, B or C. It's horrible and unlistenable.

Maybe it's not them that ruin the broadcast, but as a whole, it's a joke. Benihana commercials during an at-bat? C'mon.
