Review: Yankee Stadium Afternoon Tour
Monday I did what any baseball fan with a free afternoon and $14 can do: take a tour of Yankee Stadium that brings groups of up to 50 to the press box, inside the clubhouse, into the dugout and out to Monument Park.

Being that I've been inside the Stadium well over 100 times, I went not to learn anything new but to get some pictures, and I made like the revamped Giambino and yanked some out of the park. Here's my gallery of 21 photos, most of which I applied Photoshop's Posterize function to, just playing around a bit. I recommend using it for shots after bumping up the hue and saturation levels, while ignoring sharpening.

The Yankees run two tours daily, at noon and 1 p.m. I was able to walk up at 11:45 a.m. and buy a ticket for the later tour, which I joined after cooling my heels at Yankee Tavern for lunch. And I made sure to go when the Yankees weren't at home, as the clubhouse is closed to the public on those days.

Some other stuff of note:

• No pictures are allowed in the clubhouse, in order to protect the players' personal space. The same personal space the Yankees sell views of to the public for $14 a clip. The good: That place has seen more Champagne than all of France. The bad: It's where Hideki Irabu walked naked.

• Like any good tour, it had its share of bumbling Japanese tourists apologizing for bumping into me.

• Outside the Stadium I was told that Gerald Williams used to bang Suzyn Waldman. Now I have indeed heard them all.

• Sitting in the dugout was my favorite part. Did you know those fuckers have cooling vents in the summer and heated seats in October? The Stadium's a little old and crusty, but not where the $200 million men walk. I did imagine charging out of the dugout to bludgeon Curt Schilling with a nail-spiked bat. Man, that would be awesome.

• The gate was swung open where Mariano Rivera used to trot out before his career ended in April. That was a cool view.

• Thanks to the PK.com reader who recognized me and took that pic of me in front of Don Mattingly's retired number. She came through like the Greatest Living Ballplayer himself.

Comments: Review: Yankee Stadium Afternoon Tour

I've always wanted to do that tour but tailgating usually takes top priority. I may have to look into it now. later

I just lost all respect for Gerald Williams. Being good friends with Jeter, you would think he could get something better than that. Damn.

That was me who took your picture yesterday in Mon.Park! (tall, curley hair, glasses, was with a man wearing a Donnie Baseball TShirt)

My husband and I took the day off of work to indulge in our beloved Yankees. Believe it or not, we've been to the stadium dozens of times and never been to Mon. Park.

Keep up the good work Paul. You take amazing pictures!!

Hey BTW, some dude got thrown out of the Clubhouse for snapping a pic. His girlfriend stayed with the tour while he was escorted out of the cathedral. Kids these days..

Thanks for the pic, Kathie. I think that one came out great. Gonna post your own pics anywhere?

I didn't see that guy get tossed from the clubhouse, but that's funny. Not sure what the was in there that was so private. Or why anyone would want a picture of it that badly.

Reading your blog, I get the impression that you're a Yankees fan. As a Sox fan, I'm interested in your opinion. Who do you least want to see come to the plate for the Sox in a clutch situation this weekend? Who do you most want up for Yankees?

Most feared going by feeling in stomach
1. Matsui 2. Sheffield 3. Jeter 4. Arod 5. Bernie(subject to change recently, beg. last season prob #3 tied for 2) 6. Posada, but only cuz I hate him so much 7. Giambi 8. Cano(really no idea) 9. Womack(before last season, he's the type of guy who makes something fucked up happen and the Red Sox lose)

I want up
1. Ortiz 2. Manny 3. Damon 4. Mueller 5. Tek 6. Trot 7. Renteria 8. Millar 9. Bellhorn
3-6 all very close Millar, last if there's one on and 0 or 1 out, as he'll hit into a DP 85-89% of the time. 95% if the pitcher is running out of gas.

Is he threatening to punch more fans? Seriously what's Sheffield's deal. Does he just want to remind everyone that Kenny Rogers isn't the only asshole at the All-Star game?

I'm gonna cool it with the Yanks stuff for a bit. The midseason report and tour demanded updates, though. I guess I'll have to do something Monday after the four-game series. Till then, I'll go back to News and Web Finds.

I pretty much agree with your lineups there. The top fve or six on each team is so tough. Obviously, our confidence in Giambi is rising quickly.

Cano is 0-for-9 with the bases loaded. That hasn't gotten a lot of ink. He's been fine, overall, for a rook.

God help any and all pitchers this weekend. The Yankees have 11 straight games against tough lineups (BOS, TEX, LAA), then a day off before six more against MIN and LAA.

How deep the starters go into the games obviously has a snowball effect. You hate to go into any game or entire series with the bullpen overworked.

Am I confused, or did you say Don Mattingly is the current greatest living ballplayer?

Posted by Furps at July 12, 2005 2:43 PM

I've said it 8,000 times. Welcome to the site.

Posted by Paul Katcher at July 12, 2005 2:55 PM

thanks. good to be here. while we'll prob have to agree to disagree on don mattingly, you've got a great site.

Posted by Furps at July 12, 2005 3:00 PM

nice pictures, i've been meaning to do that tour even though i've seen most of the clubhouse doing games for work.

As always, fabulous pics. You are looking hotter then ever :).

Don't back off of the Yankees talk. You are my Yankees source since they don't ever speak or write about them here in the Philly area.

I had the pleasure of visiting Yanke Stadium for the first time (and only so far) on May 16, 2002. I took the #4 train and got there early to do the self-guided tour including Monument Park. The only word to describe the entire experience is "awesome"! I got a ball hit by Bernie Williams during BP and then enjoyed the game from section 11. One of the biggest differences between the game in Yankee Stadium and Safeco field is how Knowledgeable the fans are in NY. It was a great experinece, the best part after the 13-0 win over Tampa was the NY fans shouting "#uck the Red Sox" and the transit police making them stop before the train was allowed to leave.

My math may be off, but...

Number of times PK has refered to Donnie B. as the greatest living player = number of scoreless innings needed by Foulke to match Mariano "He needs another pitch" Rivera's ERA.

Response to Birdflu...

BoSox lineup 1. Ortiz - everyone else tied for 9th.

Yanks lineup Matsui, Jeter, Sheff, Bernie, Sierra. Still don't trust Arod yet.
