Please Donate All You Can to the Yankees
A terrible thing has happened, and images of the fallout been nothing short of devastating. A lot of people are in need of your money, and you know exactly what I'm talking about.

The Yankees failed to land the most-prized free agent on the market.

It was all because of money, and we can't allow such a thing to happen again. That's why I implore all of you to look into your hearts and send what you can to:

New York Yankees Payroll Fund
c/o George M. Steinbrenner III
Yankee Stadium
161 Street and River Avenue
Bronx, NY 10451

Please join me and my friends Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Gary Sheffield, Mariano Rivera, Mike Mussina, Hideki Matsui, Jorge Posada and other potential 2005 All-Stars as we lead the charge toward an eighth straight AL East title.

If you cannot afford to send cash today, please keep the Yankees in your hearts this season by buying tickets, apparel, enough Stadium hot dogs to feed Kobayashi for a month, or simply by keeping your TV tuned to the YES network, in order to drive up ad revenues.

Today's baseball trivia question: What's the most money ever paid by a team for a player who, in six full seasons, has made only one All-Star team, has never been among the league's top 10 in any Triple Crown category (BA, HR, RBI), has never finished higher than ninth in MVP voting, has never won a Gold Glove or led the league in anything but games played (once).

Answer: $119 million by the New York Mets, 2004.

Yeah, but if A-Rod and his postseason performance is worth 200 million, Beltran and his postseason performance is a real bargain! ;-)

In all seriousness, Beltran probably made himself about $20 million in those couple of weeks. Maybe more.

In 11 postseason games last year, A-Rod hit .320 (16-for-50), with eight extra-base hits, including three home runs. Scored 11, drove in eight and stole a couple of bases. I'll take all those numbers any day (do the math over 162 and you'll see).

i'm still pissed that the astros didn't sign beltran, and the whole gazillion dollar contracts thing is getting to be a little much to stomach these days.

sigh.

Believe me, I checked A-Rod's numbers... if they would have been bad I would have posted them! ;-)

I'd say 20 mil is on the low end of what Beltran made with his spectacular playoff performance!

Hmmmm...adjusting for inflation, could the answer be Danny Tartabull in 1992?

This brings to mind one of my favorite quotes from this offseason (regarding the $10,000 A-Rod Fan Experience):

"I've spent for some crazy stuff," says Barry Halper, a minority owner of the Yankees. "But an A-Rod 'experience'? How about he hits a few balls through the infield in the postseason? That's the kind of A-Rod experience I'd like."

Sour grapes from a Yankees fan? The Mets finally beat the Yanks at their own game - overpay for the best available pitcher and hitter.

Of course any NYer should be proud to live in a city so great that it can afford TWO all-star laden, baseball teams!

I'll be rooting all year for another Subway Series this October, with a slightly different ending than 2000.

By the way, I thought the Big Ugly was doing us all a favor when he covered up the camera with his hands. There's gotta be a YES network email out there saying, "easy on the close-ups this year".

Surely you did not just refer to the Mets as "All-Star laden" in the same breath as the royalty in the Bronx.

In 2002-04 combined, the Yankees had 19 All-Stars. The Mets had 4.

Perhaps the Mets can match that number this year, though.

There's a lot of "perhaps" with the Mets, but at least it'll be fun, since people are definitely looking on the positive side of this team: ya know, stuff like thinking Kris Benson is a big score when he's a below-.500 pitcher who happens to have a slutty wife.

I'm still thinking they win 90 in a best-case scenario, which is about where the Yanks would end up worst-case.
