Get Ready For This Site to Suck
Throughout the history of this site — which is more than four years and millions of user visits — I've understood that its greatest strengths are its regularity and the amount of time I invest in the posts. Both are about to take a hit, thanks to some otherwise good news.

Starting next week I'll be writing a twice-a-week column for ESPN.com's Page 3. Every Monday and Thursday, I'll be touching on a number of watercooler topics in the worlds of sports and pop culture, just as I've done here. Already you can assume there will be a lack of content here on those same days. Regulars already know PK.com is usually on break during weekends. More importantly, I'll be saving my "good stuff" for ESPN, because I want to kick ass for them. I've worked and written for FOXSports.com and TIME.com, but I was primarily a web producer during those years. This is my first crack at being able to concentrate solely on writing and, most importantly, in a style that fits my abilities.

PK.com is not closing up shop. This has always been an enjoyable creative outlet, and there will be many times I'll want to touch on something that won't fit the ESPN column's mission. I'll have an ode to the closing Village Idiot in NYC next week, a Vegas trip report in a few weeks, a full-fledged NFL preview, Harpoontang's live album recording in September, my usual photos, etc.

Everything regarding the new gig is still in its concept stage — name, format, etc. All I know for now is that I could use your readership and support over there. Keep forwarding your interesting links and news items, maybe even send a bullshit note to their editors about how great the new guy is (maybe wait for three or four pieces to go live).

I never liked to mix work and play, so you might not hear much more about this here. But I thought it better to explain it now than have people wondering what happened to the site they once knew. And I hope to be so busy writing that it'll never come back. We'll see.

Congrats PK...very well deserved. I read the last article you had up there and it was awesome. Don't forget to link the articles so us lazy people don't forget to check them out.

Good luck!

Congratulations! That's great! Way better than blogging. High-fives and cold drafts to you!

Posted by nobody at July 23, 2004 4:38 AM

Well, there's one significant difference than blogging, which is monetizing my writing. But it won't be much different, aside form obvious limits on language, links and Dick Vitale jokes.

In short, same stuff, different address.

And I've done that all before for high-profile, mainstream media. Just have never been able to call it my focus.

Posted by Paul Katcher at July 23, 2004 8:07 AM

Great News!! ESPN.com was getting a bit stale, you'll bring some of the fun back to it. Best of luck.

Posted by Dave K at July 23, 2004 8:42 AM

Mazel Tov! Your site inspired me to start a blog of my very own. I think it is great you will get to write for a broader audience, bringing the inane and humorous to the masses!

Posted by Baron at July 23, 2004 8:56 AM

Why dont you have guest writer on those days. This would be a good way for other talented writers to "strut their stuff". Plus with the amount of hits your site receives it would be good exposure. That was alot of seriousness for so early in the morning. How about we end the comment with "Woo peed on my rug, man!"
"The rug did tie the room together"

Posted by Hallas at July 23, 2004 8:59 AM

In a sense my site has always featured guest writers, in the forms of links. I've definitely linked to blog entries before, though only ones I thought would be interesting for my audience. But I don't care whether a writer typically gets 50 readers or 50,000. If it's good, I'll link to it.

In terms of other people's content being hosted on this domain, I think it would be a bit confusing.

Posted by Paul Katcher at July 23, 2004 9:27 AM

Congrats on your new gig!! ESPN.com is already one of my daily morning reads, and now it is going to get even better:)!

Best Wishes!

Posted by Cass at July 23, 2004 10:06 AM

Good for you man. Gettin' paid, gettin' paid. That's for the Chappelle fan in you.

Posted by The 7th Angel at July 23, 2004 10:19 AM

Congrats Paul. On those days you wont be posting, your post should be a link to the article you wrote. Give us die hard fans something to do with our time!

Posted by Livia at July 23, 2004 10:29 AM

A paying job? Next round is on you, then..

Posted by lucy at July 23, 2004 11:32 AM

Congratulations! I'm looking forward to your columns for ESPN. With you and Bill Simmons, I think they've got a great 1-2 combo.

Posted by TTman at July 23, 2004 11:55 AM

I'm more apt to call it a freelance gig than a job.

I don't think I'll be crossing paths with Simmons. He's Page 2, I'm working with Page 3. Maybe in October if the Sox make it to the playoffs. Maybe when Madden comes out. Maybe if I reference The Godfather 1,000 times.

Posted by Paul Katcher at July 23, 2004 12:08 PM

It's always good to see a Syracuse grad making good :-) Of course, you've been making good for awhile, so it's about time someone like ESPN.com noticed.

Posted by CJ at July 23, 2004 12:30 PM

Freelance shmeelance... who cares... you're doing what you fucking love. Good for you!!! We need to celebrate with adult bevies.

Posted by StephanieKlein at July 23, 2004 12:33 PM

Congrats Paul. Best of luck with the new gig.

Congrats PK. Just think of how many times you will be recognized now at Yankee games. Your gonna be a superstar!

Posted by Ayan at July 23, 2004 2:33 PM

Well done PK. Good Luck. I hear it's a good outfit to work for.

You know how in the movies when a guy goes to prison they always say your supposed to find someone and kick thier ass, just so everyone knows not to mess witcha? I think I speak for all Yankee fans when I say it would be great if on day one you walk in and beat the crap out of Bill Simmons. He's an ass.

Good Luck

Congrats PK!

This site has entertained me for a few months now - looking forward to checking out Page 3 but I do hope you keep this one up as an occasional hobby

Good job, Katch.
Sports Center is next.

Posted by jimbo at July 23, 2004 11:57 PM

Congrats, Paul! Now the readership of ESPN.com will realize what your site readership already knows - the fact that you're a very talented writer. I look forward to reading your stuff (especially with the NFL season coming up...woo hoo! :) ) Way to go!!! :)

Posted by Julie at July 24, 2004 12:37 AM

Excellent news. Congratulations!

Posted by bhw at July 24, 2004 2:29 PM

Paul, great job on the column gig. I really liked your first one and look forward to reading more.

Posted by Pat at July 25, 2004 3:36 AM

Paul, I've never been to New York, and I live in Canada for God's sake. But I read your site every day. I found it one day, and have not looked back. I guess the punchy writing, regular updates, and occasional links to hot babes are an irresistable trifecta.

Best of luck, and don't limit yourself. I don't always agree with your positions on sports teams, goats, or feature film, but I admire the way you express it and package it.

Posted by Tequila Dave at July 26, 2004 1:12 PM

I go out of town for a couple of days and come back to find PK up and writing for ESPN.com???

Congratulations Paul!!!

I read Page3 today. Very good inaugural column.

I know I'll be there on Mondays & Thursday's to read it from now on and will be passing it on to others as well.

Posted by Shumpy at July 26, 2004 2:56 PM

Congrats Paul... You deserve it! Your one of the coolest dudes I met in a while. Good luck!

Posted by dannycos at July 26, 2004 4:33 PM

Excellent job on the first article. I thought for sure you would some how mention the soccer ref who shot and killed a coach who disagreed with one of his calls. My question is beyond the obvious one of what has this world come to, what soccer ref decides when he is getting dressed for a game to pack a gun in his shorts? Lets see, I have my whistle, my yellow card, red card, clock, ... what am I missing. Oh yeah, MY GUN!! Dont ever come to a match with out it.

Posted by mr. anonymous at July 26, 2004 5:13 PM

Wish I'd known about the soccer story. Would've definitey included that.

Posted by Paul Katcher at July 26, 2004 7:35 PM

Paul,

Great news. You deserve the success. I'm excited to see your stuff!

Posted by Brooks at July 26, 2004 11:47 PM

Great Marty Kove mention in your first article. Well done.

Posted by Tony at July 27, 2004 3:00 AM

I found your site a couple years ago when I googled for "Spring Break webcam". You've come a long way.

Posted by doghive at July 28, 2004 12:39 AM

Congrats, Paul. Good luck over at Page 3, and I'll hold back on 'that new guy is good' email to the editors for a bit.
