Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2004
On Tuesday, the New York Post reported on Time Warner CEO Richard Parson's office in the new $1.7 billion Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle, which I walked through on my walk home from work Monday. His dream suite measures 650 square feet and features a 500-square-foot conference room, plasma TVs and a private terrace overlooking Central Park. The space is, according to the Post, "being built out at a cost of some $25 million and is to be completed next month. The raw space alone would be worth $20 million on the open market."

Some of it has been financed, no doubt, by the tits and ass that grace this week's 40th edition of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Not that I really care. I have no moral objections to profiting off of sex and think those protests of sexism are bunk. I just find it hilarious that the Time Inc. publishing empire's most financially successful franchise — which has spawned a wealth of calendars and videos — is almost entirely T&A and irrelevant to its title's objective, which is to cover the world of sports.

I wonder if those plasma TVs in Parsons' office will show clips of Heidi Klum getting her breasts painted.

Other Swimsuit Issue Links:

My 2003 Swimsuit Issue Write-Up — I wrote in more detail about major companies profiting off of sex, from AOL's chat rooms to ESPN's late-night commercials to AT&T and MCI Worldcom's 1-900 lines. Even eBay has 88,426 items listed in its Mature Audiences category. And Amazon sells natural male enhancement pills and plenty of books on anal sex.

Athletes Model Swimsuits for SI — My favorite annual feature that showcases the freakishly fit bodies athletes have.

SI Swimsuit Issues on eBay — My Sports Illustrated collection stretches into the several hundreds, and I own nearly every swimsuit issue from the last 30 years.

Past Swimsuit Issue Covers — My favorites are Cheryl Tiegs in 1975, Christie Brinkley in 1980, Kathy Ireland in 1989 and Vendela in 1993.

Comments: Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2004

I used to care about the SI Swimsuit Issue, but it's kind of a non-event these days. With Maxim, FHM, Stuff.... etc. out there every month it's almost a sensory overload. Before you couldn't wait to get the issue because it was the only thing going (besides of course a porno mag).... but now it's just another one on the stack next to the toilet.

That said, of course the chicks are unbelievable, they are still swimsuit models and all...... Heidi Klum.... grrrr....

Great point about how Maxim and the rest have stolen SI's thunder. Today's newsstand is a diluted market of bikini gals. I should probably shoot myself for even considering that this is a bad thing.

Swimsuit issue has been a disappointment for years.

I just got the issue delivered to my office. I gotta say it's a rather impressive body of work. Wet shirts, ass cracks, missing bikini tops. Everything you'd expect from a sports magazine is there.

http://nypost.com/business/17569.htm :
"Time Warner has bought 800,000 square feet on 15 floors of the 2.7 million-square-foot complex at Columbus Circle - considered the most expensive building in the world, at a price of more than $1.8 billion."

Do you realize that works out to $666 per sq ft to build the building? Hope no one there's superstitious.

Well, the swimsuit issue *is* sexist, as is all pin-up stuff, but so what? Don't like? Don't look.

Now, my problem is with the athlete's feature. Eddie George is not showing NEARLY enough skin, nor are any of the guys, for that matter. They're all wearing knee-length, baggie shorts! WTF? I get a better look at Eddie's nice butt in his football pants. That ain't right.

When a man has a beautiful, sculpted body, puh-leeze don't hide it behind a woman's beautiful, sculpted body. Equal opportunity, please!

I used to mail in the covers to SI with return envelopes to get them autographed.

I had one mailed back by the cover model who wrote to me in Spanish. I got a few signed by Elle MacPherson, Kathy Ireland and Vendela.

I was sorry to see Heidi Klum has joined the ranks of the retirees. She deserved a cover. Maybe if they do another swimsuit compilation she might get one.

And Molly Sims is also a babe who I'd like to see get a cover.

I never understood why they never had Claudia Schiffer in their mag. She was probably the only name model they missed.
