All Hail the Great Adam Shapiro!
On the University of Maryland's Department of Theater alumni update page, it reads that "Adam Shapiro (BA 2002) can be seen on a national commercial for T-Mobile." Can be seen? More like cannot be avoided. I must've seen this commercial roughly 12,000 times this month.

But, you know what? Unlike that Gellin' commercial that drove me nuts, I kinda like it.

The spot is titled "Freeloader" (though I guess "Jewish Stereotype" would have worked, too) and features cheap-ass Adam mooching lodging for his cross country trip by hitting up anyone who has ever heard of him. A first grade classmate, his Uncle Saul and (my favorite) Wyyyaaaaaaaaaattttttt! He phones them first, of course, through his nationwide calling plan — which I do not have, meaning that AT&T would probably charge me $4,000 and my first born to place the same calls.

I wonder, though, is the Adam Shapiro phenomenon finding its way across to your neck of the woods? And second, who the hell names their kid Wyatt these days?

Other Web Finds:

Joe Rogan: Dennis Leary and Robin Williams Are Thieves — The new co-host of the Man Show accuses Leary and Williams of stealing other comics' jokes. (A friend of mine told me this about Williams more than a decade ago.) Leary responds by poking fun at Fear Factor, saying that Rogan's job is "watching ex-bartenders eat worms."

IGN's Top 100 Video Games of All Time — In freshman year of college, I was addicted to Nos. 4 and 1, Super Mario Brothers and Tetris. Between them, beer and lusting after thousands of women, I don't know how I ever got work done. Oh that's right, I didn't.

Printing Digital Photos? Think BigPC Magazine's John C. Dvorak on some large-paper printing options you have. How cool would it be to print your own 11x17 photos? It's easier than you think, and it costs only $2 to $3 each.

Old Photos of Fred Durst — I don't know who let these photos out in public, but I imagine Durst has a contact out on him right now.

Comments: All Hail the Great Adam Shapiro!

Don't really care for the Adam Shapiro commercial one way or the other. And yes, they show it in Denver.
My favorite commercial is the guy in the grocery store who bee lines the pineapple at the check-out guy. Now that is hilarious!

I've heard the same thing said about Robin Williams over the years, but I always wondered about the validity of such statements.

Robin is one of my favorite comedians, but I've heard from friends that the business is not for the meek.

They are showing it in Wichita Kansas. I think it is an OK ad, my favorite one right now is the guy in the locker room after the football game blaming it on the rest of the team. Does anyone know what that commercial is for?

Posted by Mac at September 25, 2003 11:09 AM

They show that stupid Adam Shapiro commercial non-stop on Philadelphia stations. I thought it was cute at first, but now that I have seen it a million times, I am bored with it. Only people that marry their cousins name their children Wyatt.

BTW, I didn't know that Fred Durst was once a gay sailor. I think that pic is hilarious, since he thinks he is such a tough guy.

The Shapiro commercial is seen here in Orlando. The only time I remember the name Wyatt is the dork from "Weird Science". At least he was able to create Kelly Lebrock using a very primitie computer. One of the girl's that works for me is dating a guy named Whitney. I never heard that used in the masculaine form before.

Posted by martin at September 25, 2003 2:39 PM

Whitney for a guy? Then again, my next door neighbor is a smoking hot guy and his name is Shannon. Shannon! That is an Irish name for a girl, and I don't know how someone could do that to their son. All of these names are still better than Wyatt...

I forgot to mention a commercial that grosses me out. There is a new commercial for a sandwich chain called Quizno's. One guys says to another guy,"Were you raised by wolves?" and then you see a dream like sequence of the guy sucking milk out of a mother wolf along with baby wolves, like he is a baby nursing. Then then guy responds, "As a matter of fact I was."

This commercial is fucking nasty, and makes me not want to eat anything from Quizno's. BTW, the ad is for their new Philly Cheesesteak.

Posted by Cass at September 25, 2003 11:33 PM

That Quizno's ad is revolting. I don't know what they were thinking, but I certainly don't know much about ads and ad campaigns. Maybe they just wanted people to talk about their company, be it good or bad. I dunno?

The commercial I want to see is someone kickin' the shit out of the "Can you hear me now?" guy.

williams is notorious for stealing material and it makes me completely sick... last year at the tribeca film and comedy fest he was performing and half of his act was old - and i mean OLD - ray romano bits... i kept shouting out "hey that's Ray's bit"... "hey that's norton's bit!"... "hey that's frickin' MY bit!" (okay, so he never stole my birth control pill bit, but a girl can dream, can't she?)

don't think he really cared that i knew he stole from other's sets... bastard.

I love it! What up, it's not vain of me to look up my own name on yahoo is it?? Nice discussion about my commercial...and Cass, you should know that although they play it all the time in Philly, I'm from Philly...so it's actually kind of cool.
Thanks Paul.

Adam, let's do an interview on this site. I'll ask you about sudden fame and cell phone commercicla groupies. E-mail paul@paulkatcher.com

I too live in Philly and I think that that the t-mobile commercial is hilarious. Adam is a very funny actor. I hope he make it big sometime and invites the philly crew out to Hollywood to party with him. BTW, is that really family at the end of the commercial.

The Adam Shapiro commercial is amazing! I wish I was friends with that guy!
