Review: MTV Video Music Awards 2003
(First things first. I work across the street from Radio City Music Hall on Sixth Avenue and hoped to score some decent pre-show pics, but this year MTV moved the red carpet to the center of Rockefeller Center, so I have but a few shots of the street scene, away from the action.)

Now for the review:

Chris Rock's Monologue: Dynamite. The guy is a pro, and he took hard shots at P. Diddy and R. Kelly. Best bit was about Janet Jackson trading down and dating Jermaine DuPree. "That means we all had a shot. That's like finding out about a sale a day or two late. You mean they were selling Bentleys for $4? Damn!"

Madonna: Coolest entertainer ever. Every chick loves her. Straight guys think she's hot. Gay guys think she's hotter. I can't even think of who might be in her class of being so universally adored. Not Sinatra. Not Elvis. The Stones are lampooned on a daily basis. Maybe McCartney, but I don't think black folks revere him. Post-mullet Bono might be the current male cool-guy champ. Emimen is respected but I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me the genius tag.

Britney Spears: Playboy layout in 5-10 years, guaranteed, for my favorite music sexpot. (No, wait, Alyssa Milano did that Teen Steam thing.) Sharing the stage with Madonna was an agent's dream. Was nice to hear her actually sing for a change. Nicer still to see the opened-mouth kiss with Madonna.

N*SNYC, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, O-Town: Guess they're all finished now. Zero presence, aside from Justin solo, which doesn't count. Now is not the time to assemble the next great boy band.

Rock 'N' Roll: Was there any? I saw a punk band (Good Charlotte), a metal band (Metallica) and a touchy-feely band (Coldplay). The rap music is OK, but I think that industry is quite selfish. I don't see an appreciation for the art of music, not when there's a diamond necklace to sport or an ass to tap. So many videos are the same. Urbanites in sports jerseys, sloppy clothes, bling-bling everywhere, lots of hired ho's, lots of braggadocios rhymes and little of it insightful, pretty, intelligent, inspiring or interesting.

Funniest Moment: Jack Black being called out for his birthday and erroneously accepting the award for Most Amazing Genius of All-Time, mocking Michael Jackson, who thought he was accepting an Artist of the Millennium award last year, when he was only being given a birthday cake.

MTV Awards in General: I'm not a big celebrity guy, but I know MTV is gonna do something every year to make it worth watching. The Academy Awards couldn't take its own frivolous industry more seriously — it's acting, not medicine — and the ESPYs is sickening in its constant self-promotion of the Disney empire. For what it's worth, MTV was 10 years ahead of its time with reality programming (Real World) and it does know how to deliver programming other than videos. Plus, some chick always sluts it up on stage.

Hey Paul, I'm almost positive Britney wasn't singing. She never sings live.
What about the opened-mouth kiss between Christina & Madonna?

Posted by Livia at August 29, 2003 9:14 AM

I think Britney really was singing in the beginning. I don't think anyone's heard her voice live since the Mickey Mouse days.

Christina does nothing for me. Great voice, but if she was walking down the street in a place where her music is not recognized, no one would give her a second look. (Like me!) She's skanking it up all over the place, and it still doesn't get a rise out of me.

I am one of the few men who do not like Madonna in any way, shape, or form. She really isn't that pretty, she is about 5 years past her prime, and she has a British accent for no apparent reason. I personally like people like Norah Jones, who is kind of hot and can actually sing. Other than that, I thought your Review was awesome.

Great review. I never leave comments but I must say that I agree with all you said- especially about Chris Rock, can't get much funnier than that guy.

Posted by Stefanie at August 29, 2003 1:31 PM

I agree with John. I'm not a rabid anti-Madonna person, but I just don't find her all that appealing. I was fairly indifferent until she started sporting the British accent. The height of pretentiousness.

Gotta agree with you on the current state of rap and Chris Rock. There's a couple of dvds out now for the "Best of the Chris Rock Show" - absolutely hilarious.

People give me a blank look when I reply to their question "who do you like in rap" and I say Public Enemy, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest. I can only take so much rapping about yout money and your dick.

i can't believe anyone could find madonna unappealing or "not that pretty." i pray to god my wife looks like that when i'm that old.

Posted by RP at August 30, 2003 4:34 AM

Sorry, I have to agree with John here. There is really nothing about Madonna that does it for me. Those gap teeth don't help either. Britney and Jessica Simpson are much more attractive.

Posted by Cory at August 30, 2003 9:02 AM

I wasn't referring to her looks in the post. I meant that I can't think of another celebrity that is almost universally appreciated.

She makes bad movies, but has she has always been an a-lister and, unlike Elvis or Michael Jackson, never a punchline.

And her legion of fans is so diverse: black, white, Latino, straight, gay, female, male. That's what I'm talking about.

The Madonna/Britney/Christina act was interesting. Madonna kissing Britney was hot even though it is disturbing when you realize that Madonna is old enough to be her mother. The kiss with Christina was just nasty because I can't get passed the fact that Christina is a skank. She needs to be soaped up and hosed down because she is just dirty, and there is nothing sexy about her. Madonna is hot, and I hope that I look that good when I am that old.

Has anyone else noticed that now Jessica Simpson is no longer the Christian virgin (she recently got married to that tool from 98 Degrees), that she is wearing more revealing clothing? She is just gorgeous. If you catch her "reality show" on MTV, she reveals that she isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, though. Oh well, when you are that smoking hot it doesn't matter.

i never post, but here goes...never a punchline? i'd call the whole truth or dare thing a punchline. it was even spoofed on wayne's world...come on!

Madonna - Once the heroine of all 80's girls, got weird in the 90's and even weirder in the new century. I like some songs like the one from the James Bond movie and a few from that Ray of Light CD.

Brittany- Didn't do bad for a girl from Slidell Louisiana. I find her body and moves pretty hot, but there is something about her face I don't really go for. Maybe it is her eyes.

Christina - The only one of the above two that can actually sing, has good moves and can pull off going from blond to black. In my book, she is skanky enough to be totally hot in a pull her hair and slap her ass kind of way. Probably a nice ride.

Jessica - Hands down the hottest. No further comment needed.

I think the that Madonna kissing girls three times younger then her was nasty and quite disturbing. EEwww!! =)
