Roundup: Sports Writers Go on the Assault
Monday always means great sports commentary, because athletes have had all weekend to do dumb things. Let's check in on some of this week's interesting commentary:

Peter King vs. Emmitt SmithSports Illustrated's NFL writer has a bone to pick with the NFL's all-time leading rusher, who King claims is trying to backtrack on his comments about the punchless Cowboys. Worse, King says, Smith is laying blame on a writer (King) with an agenda. (See item No. 5 of 10 Things I Think section.) King's MMQB is my favorite sports column, online or otherwise. The anti-Vitale, the anti-Madden, King delivers real insights and takes readers into locker rooms and executive offices every week — and his terrible predictions nearly single-handedly ruined my fantasy football team last season.

Dave Kindred vs. Mark Cuban — The Sporting News' Kindred thinks he's refuting Cuban when he writes "[Kobe Bryant's arrest on sexual assault charges is] not entertainment to be packaged, marketed and sold." No shit, Sherlock. Cuban didn't say it was. He said that the media frenzy caused by this one instance will affect positively the NBA's bottom line. I couldn't agree more, and I'm so fired up by people looking to paint Cuban as a sadistic supporter of raping and pillaging for profit that I'm ready to fight for the guy. This is a pile-on by media professionals who know for absolute certain the broad monetary effect of such a circus.

Phil Mushnick vs. N.Y. Jets — Halfway through his mostly-media-but-he'll-bitch-about-anything column, the New York Post's Mushnick notes that the Jets are "charging/extorting $50 per year to be on their season-tickets waiting list." Unreal, but if people are willing to pay for it, why shouldn't the Jets do it?

Phil Taylor vs. Jeremy Shockey — Getting past the "homo" stuff, Sports Illustrated's writer at-large calls out the Giants tight end for having "conveniently ignored the fact that he had originally denied ever saying the offending word in the interview." Apparently, No. 80 in your scorebook and No. 1 in your hearts is not only stupid but a liar.

Phil Mushnick vs. Philadelphia Eagles — A Sunday bonus! Mushnick gets on the team the Giants will beat for the NFC East title for disallowing outside food and beverage due to supposed security reasons. Commenting on accusations that the club is tastelessly trying to inflate concession stand profits, Eagles president Joe Banner says, "It is patently irresponsible in this day and age to question the motives behind a policy driven by and recommended by security experts."

Comments: Roundup: Sports Writers Go on the Assault

I believe the Eagles lifted that ban and now want fans bringing their own food to enter at a specific entrance for security reasons. They've decided to start covering their ass for the stupid decision they made the the first place.

on the cuban thing

Cuban's only problem is that he's relatively honest. He made an honest statement without worrying about what kind of spin might be put on it or how it might be edited into an "out of context" sound bite.

Cuban made an honest statement about a business matter. No where did he defend or commend Kobe's alleged actions. He is 100% correct in his statement about how the incident will benefit the NBA. The Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan fiasco catapolted a barely known competitive sport into national headlines. Figure Skating benefited greatly from that mess.

I live outside of Philly and the food ban at the Linc has been lifted. It was a major PR nightmare for the Eagles. I honestly feel that using security/safetly as an excuse to ban food was a bs. What many people outside of Philadelphia don't know is that the Eagles franchise gets a big chunk of the proceeds from food, drink and merchandising at the NEW stadium which they DID NOT have at the Vet. I knew as soon as the Eagles made that statement, that they would be retracting it. Diehard Eagles fans are certifiably insane, and would not stand for this. The price of season tickest tripled and parking prices doubled at the new stadium, then to ban food was the last straw. The Eagles were making football here a white collar sport and taking it away from true blue fans. Philadelphia already ruined basketball and hockey with the insane costs of attending games. I am a Sixers season ticket holder, so I can bitch about it.

FYI: outside food and beverage has been banned, along with any bag larger than a purse, at Yankee Stadium since 9/11. Not sure about the other New York venues.

And at Giants Stadium, cameras were banned from the Springsteen show. I don't know if it was because of how small and sophisticated video cameras are these days, but I thought it was plain lousy considering the risk/reward of that scenario. Cheating thousands of people from capturing memories just to eliminate crappy-sounding bootlegs.

The Dallas owner is right on the money. He knows the same as everybody whether the league admits it or not that the NBA gets more of a return on the bad boy image of the Iversons then the good guy image of the Tim Duncans.

And as far a Shockey; he should have admitted he said the word homo and not apologized. And told his coach to stick it. There is a team in Oakland that doesn't play pc police and all you have to do out there is have fun, be yourself and win. Shockey has a good "go to hell or do something about it" attitude for a football player. The Giants could use 40 of him instead of taking the edge off the one guy who comes to play like he means it.

Emmitt - Got it on the money. 'Boys sucked last couple of seasons (maybe even worse than the red birds). All-time leader is just that, a leader. He wills it to happen. He also has more class than the enigmatic Barry Sanders.

Cuban - Guy didn't become a billionaire by being stupid. He knew what he was saying, he is probably right and he furthered the coverage and probable boon from Kobe by making such a comment about it. If I'm not mistaken, I think he has a self-interest in currying attention to himself and the league. Lots of Nowitski jerseys left to sell.

Eagles - I'm a southern boy. Andrew Toney and Doctor J are about all I know about the Sixers, don't know much about hockey and I do remember Ron Jaworski who turned out to be a decent announcer.

Shcokey - It's in his name isn't it. He's just a good ol boy never meaning no harm and been in trouble with the press since the day he was born. As long as he is talking from the gut, he is entitled to his opinion and shouldn't bend to all of this PC crap that has infiltrated our country.

Sincerely, JC - The Irish-French-Spanish-German-Louisianian-Houstonian-American
