Head 2 Head: Zuko vs. Fonzie
Here's how Head 2 Head works: I throw out a debate between two people, places or things, and you settle it by posting a comment.

Today's question: In honor of Grease 3 getting greenlighted, I ask: Who was cooler, Danny Zuko or Fonzie?

Danny Zuko: John Travolta goes down under on Australian Sandy Olsson
Pros: His defensive skills in basketball (punching out an evasive ball-handler) made me long for the no-layups days of the mid-'90s Knicks... In the end, got Sandy to change to be like him, which is the way it should be with women... Reminded Rizzo that sloppy seconds wasn't his style.
Cons: Shook his hips a little too much for my tastes... Thought he was too cool for Sandy, like hanging out with fellow T-Birds Doody, Sonny and Putzie rivaled the life of Sinatra.
Quote: "Oh, bite the weenie, Riz."

Arthur Fonzarelli: Henry Winkler becomes coolest 5-6 ½-inch tall Jew ever
Pros: Reached the pinnacle of TV-sitcom stardom: applause upon first entrance... The real Milwaukee's Best, Fonzie got every broad in town. Blondes, brunettes, firecrotches, the Fonz got 'em up into that apartment over the Cunningham's garage... Got anything with a snap: a new song, peace and quiet or a slice of Mrs. C's cherry apple pie... Referred to himself as "The Fonz," and we should all be so cool as to trade in "I" for "The (Something)."
Cons: Winkler was much more convincing in his role as Chuck Lumley, the ultra-puss who turned a morgue into a brothel in Night Shift... Seemed to crash his bike every time he tried some cool stunt... Hung out with Potsie, for fuck's sake... His office with a men's room in a diner.
Quote: "Aaaaaaaaaaaaay!"

Comments: Head 2 Head: Zuko vs. Fonzie

The Fonz was definitely cooler. When I was a kid, I had a Fonzie T-shirt I wore as pajamas. My mom told everybody I slept with The Fonz every night.
Aaaaaaay! What can I say!

For surely you can not think that Zuko had anything on the Fonzies style, skill, or mack-atude. i mean, for the most part, the Fonz had a new girl or two... or three... every episode. plus, the Fonz was the underdog that never gave up. even when he was out of his own territory, he never failed to succeed. come on now... do you even think for a second that the punk surfer had a chance aginst the Fonz when jumping over the shark pool? i doubt it.

Fonz rules... i mean.. what did Zuko ever achieve besides going down on sandy? nada.

Among the '70s lunchbox idols, I am definitely partial to Fonzie. The star loses some luster, though, as I get older and Henry Winkler looks more and more like a math teacher. Face it, I could kick The Fonz's ass.

The Fonz gets funnier and funnier every time I see him ride his bike into a room or hold court in a bathroom stall. 30 years old and drinking milkshakes with high-school kids? You can get arrested for that these days.

Zuko has two things going for him: 1) Travolta's pretty cool long after Grease; and 2) Sandy's get-up in the carnival scene was hot, hot, hot. Anyone who went home with that piece gets credit in my book.

They both sucked. Alf was the man.

Posted by JC at May 8, 2003 9:17 AM

Well, if we are comparing Henry Winkler to John Travolta, I'll bet even though Henry is a little guy, he could still kick Travolta's ass.
Unless of course, John Travolta is his Vincent Vega character from Pulp Fiction.
If it was a dance contest, then I would pick Travolta.
I would fuck either or both of them (oops, did I say that out loud?)

i think that the fonz was way cooler back in the day, but he has never played the part of anyone cool since. Travolta played on of the most bad ass characters ever in pulp fiction. advantage: johnny boy

Duh, the Fonz

Hey, I haven't seen you sign in for the Scavenger Hunt. Who knows, you might have to go to Coyote Ugly to gather some boot...gotta go

Posted by meg at May 8, 2003 2:44 PM

easy. you dont see weezer making any 'grease' themed video's, now do you?

just pathetic rappers like ja rule....murda...

Posted by madmathias at May 8, 2003 3:15 PM

Well... no one picked Danny Zuko, so I'll try. Think of it this way... Grease 2 had an upgrade from Olivia Newton John to Michelle Pfeiffer... and the movie was much, much worse. I gotta figure it's because of no Danny Zuko, right?

Plus... Danny had a reason to wear a leather jacket and act the way he did... he was in high school. What was the Fonz's excuse? What did that guy do with his life?

Posted by CJ at May 8, 2003 8:16 PM

That last comment touches on an interesting point. Fonz was a self-made mechanic who drank milkshakes with high-schoolers.

He was the Buttafuoco of the '50s.

Danny Zuko.

Because I said so and I'm too tired to debate tonight.

Posted by Kathy Howe at May 8, 2003 11:03 PM

Let's see, strictly on the cool factor, I'd have to pick the Fonz. He was cooler than Zuko.

BUT ...

Danny Zuko was cuter and sexier, partially because he wasn't as cool as he was trying to be. We gals fall for that shit too often, I know, but it's true.

But I loved Henry Winkler in Night Shift!

Posted by bhw at May 8, 2003 11:41 PM

oh danny!
the fonz would look pretty silly singing stuff like
stranded at the drive-in and
greased lightning....
and kiniky was way cooler then ritchy.
