Just one click - that's what I get today, and it's you. The man with a plan. Your posts are fierce and fun.

So completely off the subject all I have to say is GO KINGS! Had to miss going to the playoff game last night due to a minor injury, but they'll be carrying me down the steps when we get to the KINGS vs. LAKERS game.

Diggin' on what you are doing here. Your site rocks (and rolls).
if you ask me, the alcoholic excuse is just that - an excuse. alcoholism is a serious thing, and if eustachy suffers from it then that's a major issue and i'm glad he's dealing with it. but his actions had more to do with bad decision making than alcohol.
he would have embarassed his team and school whether he was drinking at that party or not. he told the team he had 'personal matters to deal with' and stayed at the mizzou campus. so first of all, he told them a blatant lie (in a sober state of mind). and after coaching a full game and losing (in a sober state of mind), he decided to attend a mizzou party (in a sober state of mind). it appears eustachy set himself up to disappoint a lot of people without alcohol being part of the equation.
obviously the events at the party made matters much worse, and caused eustachy to draw more attention to himself than he originally planned. but a 'leader' who takes his men into a battle only to lie to them and side with the enemy after a loss... it's just not right. someone like that shouldn't be coaching at the level he coaches at and shouldn't make the dollars he's making.
i hope he gets help for his problems, but he can still do it whether he's employed at ISU or not.
I would argue that alcoholism does affect one's decisions when one's sober. That's what addictions do: they drive you to your vice, come hell or high water.
Being an alcoholic doesn't mean not being able to hold your liquor. It means an unquenchable thirst for liquor. Going to the party was as much about being an alcoholic as his reported refusal to leave the party.
And some people say, "He made bad decisions there: not leaving, drinking too much, kissing girls, badmouthing the team." Well, duh.
It sounds to me like Eustachy is either telling the truth about his alcoholism, or that he and his wife are both lying. Only they know the truth.
But if you've ever been close to someone who's an alcoholic, then you know that a) they can be "functioning" alcoholics who can hold down stressful jobs during the day, only to come home and drink all night. And then do it again the next day ... and b) that, to use a tired phrase, the person often has to bottom out or have some eye-popping event [like a car crash or embarrasing photos] make them admit they've lost control.
I agree with Paul that an alcholic's physical thirst for the alcohol impairs his/her judgement before the can/bottle/glass reaches his/her lips.
I've been to Iowa; it's not that conservative or intolerant. I think Eustachy just has bad timing because schools are becoming less tolerant of their "role models" stepping out of the very narrowly drawn box they put themselves into when they sign their contract. This would have been a non-issue five years ago, I think. But now, after years of exposes of college sports teams running amok on campus, coaches have to be choir boys [and girls, I guess] because schools don't want to appear to be soft on "bad" behavior.
I personally don't think he should be fired over this. If the school believes he has an alcohol problem, they should keep him on board and let him work it out.
I also don't think the Alabama coach should be fired for going to a titty bar or for having some young chippy in his hotel room the next morning. [He appears to have taken care of that little room service issue without letting the school have to pay.] That's his wife's problem, not his school's. He's a grown man and should be free to do what he wants on his own time, as long as it's legal.
Everyone should read CJ's opinions from the post on the 29th. That is the same type of opinion the people at Iowa State have, and the reasons they may not give Eustachy his deserved second chance.
btw, I forgot to mention, Paul, I agree wholeheartedly about Dick Vitale!
At least he's not a homo-pedo-necro-beastafeliac
regardless of whether they fire him or not, it's the beginning of the end for eustachy. no parent in their right mind will ship their child off to college to play for him if they have any opportunity to play elsewhere. if the recent off-the-court events don't get him axed, the performances on the court will. if he wasn't a leader of young men who are going through an important transitional period, keeping him would be justifiable. but he's not someone you want in charge of something like that.
there is a difference between making decesions based on alcoholism and just making an unexcusable action. Just because Eustacy has a liquer problem dosen't condone his actions of attending a house party with 20 year olds at an opposing university. I personally believe, that this alocholism remark is a Cop Out, so his actions will have some reason behind them. If he really needed to get faded that night , he could have just as easily gone to the bars or got hammered via room service. I don't even know why his school is standing beside him. I love Asu's head football coach Dirk Koetter, but if i found out koett was socializing at a UofA frat party after we just lost in football to them, i would be outraged. what kind of leadership skills does that show? What does that show to your team? Paul, think about boeheim drinking at a UCONN frat party after a game..It dosen't make sense. Alcoholic or not. Just because a transient is hungry, and he steals from a market, does it not make it wrong and unpunishable just becuase his hunger affected his judgement. Come on..He is the highest paid state worker in Iowa, he is a role model, and coach. It's about time he acts like it..By the way, the man makes over a million a year..you think he could afford something better than Natty Lite..Peace, Matt
I suppose I'm one of the hypocrits referred to in the post... especially considering my opinions in the comments the last time Eustachy was mentioned.
He's not being fired because he's an alcoholic. He's being fired because he embarrassed the university in public. And to compound it, I believe he invented the alcoholism excuse to try and save his job.
Had these pictures never been published, Eustachy obviously wouldn't have been fired. Had these pictures never been published, Eustachy would not have revealed to anyone whether or not he had a drinking problem.
Are we to believe he just suddenly realized he had this problem? He says he came to this conclusion just a few weeks ago.
The bottom line is that in the minds of his employers, he can no longer do the job effectively enough to satisfy them.
Let's take this example: Iowa coach Steve Alford and Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy are courting the Iowa state high school player of the year. Alford says to player and Mom, "I think you're better off here. I haven't been suspended by my school for having an alcohol problem."
If Jim Boeheim wound up in the Syracuse Post-Standard downing brews and smooching chickies at Georgetown, I would only hope that he reminded them we're national champs.
I would never want Jim Boeheim fired because he had one or 10 too many. So did I last week, last month, last year.
And if he had a real problem, I would hope the university would stand by him while he gets better.
Look, if Eustachy is lying, then fuck him, end of story. But if he's not lying and the university throws dirt on him, you just made is harder for people who need help to feel comfortable seeking it.
I'm surprised no one else has questioned the timing of all this. Did the Register withhold publishing the photos so as not to disrupt the team during the season? What's the photographer's life like these days?
today they said eustachy was found guilty of paying players for making free throws. if he doesn't get the axe soon, i'm not sure he ever will.
not sure if it's something to celebrate for the rest of you, but mike price got fired today. i loved the man, then he screwed over my university by leaving last season. i wouldn't have minded if he just left, i mean alabama has more tradition than wsu and all that... but he announced it during the weeks leading up to the rose bowl. so he's not thought of highly around here.
In recent years, Nick Saban, Mike Price and Dennis Franchione have accepted offers from bigger-name schools before their programs had played their bowl games. It happens.
That's the way the system works -- when a big-name program comes knocking after its season ends in November, you don't ask them if they can wait five weeks to talk.
man talk about kicking someone when they're down. If he's making attempts to recover then why do they insist on still nailing him to the wall? People suck sometimes.
