The Columbine Massacre, Four Years Later
Four years ago today, on April 20, 1999, I sat in the TV-laden newsroom shared by FOXSports.com and FOXNews.com and watched high school kids run for their lives while two fellow students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, shot up their school in a premeditated act that was the most evil thing I'd seen in my then-26 years.

This was before 9/11, of course. Before planes carrying 24,000 gallons of fuel were run into people I knew and thousands more I did not know, before the U.S. would enter two wars, before suicide bombings became an almost daily ritual in Israel (and the chance occasion to murder tourists in a Bali night club), before millions of Americans were laid off from work and more still were cheated out of their retirement money. Bill Clinton had been acquitted of two impeachment charges and the biggest worry was Y2K.

There were copycats to the Columbine killings, of course, most notably Charles "Andy" Williams, who was sentenced to 50 years in prison after killing two students at Santana High School in San Diego on March 5, 2001. Rememeber when school violence was a big deal? What happened?

Columbine students returned to the scene of the crime in August 1999 and were met by newly scrawled swastikas found in two of the school's bathrooms. (Only 15 of the 2,000 students were black.) In December of that year, they won the Colorado state 5A football championship.

I admired those kids' courage. Imagine having your life turned upside down by one horrifying, planned mass murder of people doing nothing more than sitting in a school library.

Many of us were introduced to evil on Sept. 11, 2001. The kids at Columbine had a head start. May the rest of their lives be blessed. Here's hoping the nightmares have stopped.

Comments: The Columbine Massacre, Four Years Later

Something you touched on in this entry struck me especially hard: that we keep finding new, more astonishing atrocities to replace the old ones that we found so horrific in the first place.

Columbine seems almost quaint now, in comparison to 9/11.

Maybe it it means something that people are back to being horrified by something like the Laci Peterson murder. The numbness of catastrophe and war hasn't diminished our ability to put a single senseless death in perspective.

I can't imagine the guts it took to walk back into Columbine H.S. That goes for students, teachers, staff, and administrators alike. But especially for the students.

9/11 had a greater loss of life, but "outsiders" committed those atrocities. I still find Columbine and similar school slayings hard to fathom because it's the "insiders" who did the killing. In a lot of ways, the young kid in Jonesboro who pulled the fire alarm and then basically picked off his elementary school classmates and teachers like he was at target practice scares me more than the Columbine kids. That Jonesboro kid was so *young* to be that fucked up!

Pk,

Pk i don't blame you for making an update about Columbine 4 years later, but to be honest i'm annoyed by what the media has done to this situation. They are responsible for making the story as huge as it was. One of my best friends is from littleton, and she says it wasen't even a big deal until the media wouldn't leave the story alone. Now, when we meet someone from littleton, Co all we think of is the shooting, or we ask them "how did the shooting affect you"..90 percent of the time they are like "what shootings?" Time Magazine is responable for a good portion of this shootin craze by puttin those two shitstains pics on the cover of their mag as those who died in the tragedy. Those guys were copycat duece bags who will always live in the shadow of pioneer Barry Loukitis...mc

Posted by MC at April 22, 2003 9:15 PM

Um, no, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris made it a big deal, not the media.

I don't recall seeing tape of folks with cameras and microphones gunning down students that day.

Posted by Jeff at April 22, 2003 11:49 PM

Oh my god, the "media conspiracy" does thrive, doesn't it?

Jesus ....

I drive past Santana High frequently. My friend was one of the first responders to the scene as a paramedic. Strong memories there.

Plus, I used to live not far from Columbine back in the early 90's.

Well honestly I think that columbine hits home for me. I meen My freinds and I all through high school were just like the trench coat maffia, all wering our oun coat, hatted everyone, talked about how we would take over the school. We were out casts so most importaintly we hated all the preps, the stupid little rich bitches that thought that they were better than everyone just because they had money. So sadly I can understand were they had gotten all of this anger. The first day I had seen anything on columbine I heard " the trench coat maffia" and I was glued to it couse I was thinking that was "us". Then I listened more and found out that some stupid ass kids killed 13 people in their school then took their oun lives just beacuse they thought it was the right thing to do. What I dont get is that thing with Dylan Klebold's girlfreind. I meen that bitch broght one of the guns that they used!! She should be tried the way Eric and Dylan would have been if they were alive. I know that someone is going to read this and think oh god this kid is going to do this as well, at least some point in my ramblings. But I am out of high school and see the full big picture and while in school seeing this made me think that life is just way too short to be pidded off all the time, we all should get along though that will never happen because there is always going to be some poor sap that thinks killing is a way to solve problems. I had met Eric on one ocation because he was a freind of a freind of mine and at that time I thought that he had a few good points though he spaned them out in the wrong derections.
Then one year latter this happens. I just hope that things like this stop though I feel that I was just like them in manny ways only I would never kill, killing is wrong.Oh and stop blaming the video games for what happend ok, they are just damn games. If parents would do their jobs and acually parent then maby things like this would not happen, or we would at least stop them before someone gets hurt or killed and what about the schools? They should have some blaim put on the no matter what people say. They want everyone to be into school spiret and play sports dress nice ect. Well bite me, there are manny people that want to stick alone, that hate sports, that see right through school spiret, that would much rather just go to school wereing a rock shurt and blue jeans. They may have used some names from the game doom, so what that game sucks anyway, whould people blame mr. Rogers neighborhood if there would have been a gun names Mr. Rogers???

Posted by tom Randall at July 5, 2003 5:15 PM

We all went to high school with trench coat mafia types, "gamers" (doom, dungeons and dragons etc...) actually the fact that Dylan and Eric were not even apart of that group is probably no secret to most people if not all people but of course the media always has to label, in fact they'd rather be first than right. Anyway the media dressed these two kids up like they were complete victims of asshole jock bullies and I don't doubt that, but the fact of the matter is they too would also discriminate against fellow students who weren't "gamers" basically kids who weren't "cool" like them, or so I was told by my girlfriends first cousin who went Columbine and was a junior in the cafeteria when the shooting first started. She wasn't really friends with them but she was certainly aquainted with the two. Further more I don't think they were a product of rejection or being picked on but merely a product of parents who were totally oblivious and disconnected.

I am from Australia, and our schools are so pathetic compared to America. Columbine looks like a paradise compared to Australian schools. Hell half our teachers aren't even qualified. Half our teachers careless about the students and seem so only care about their pay cheques.

When I saw pictures of columbine, I thought, if I had gone to a school as good as that, I might have made something of my life. But to see these 2 students waste so much potential.

In Australia we never drove cars to school. We don't get our licence until we're 18. But even if we did, we couldn't afford one, but at columbine they have carparks for students?

I swear Americans take it all for granted. You guys have the world at your fingertips. Don't get depressed and ruin it.

When I went to school, I used to think about shooting up all the people who bullied me. Believe me, more people do this then you think. I can imagine I would have done it, if Australia had guns widely available like America.

But I was a kid and yes the bigger picture. But something has to be done to help the kids. You can't just push the people you don't like into a corner where you can't see them.

Peace and love for all.

alright first of all, flordia, what are you thinking, are you trying to be like eric and dylan, because if thats the case, your never gonna come close, it doesnt matter if you have 64 people and a hundred guns, I promise you wont be successful, you shouldnt try to copycat columbine, thats lame, you cant just see this on the news and be like "oh lets do that" columbine was a natural act, there is no way anyone could have prevented it, its already done, just let eric and dylan rest in peace with there accomplishments

Posted by Trey at October 18, 2003 4:02 PM

you lame bastards. you posers actaully think your gonna get anywhere shooting up the place? why dont you just skip the highschool massacre and go right on to yourselves? your just as lame as any other capitalist american bastard! i hate your power hunger american government, and i hate anyone who thinks violence accomplishes anything. fuck so you get pushed around, grow up the world is like that and the only thing to do is push back... ive learnt that its not the school, nor is it 'everybody else'- its everyone. you, me, everyone. nooffense to anyone who DOESNT feel patriotic about their country.

I think people should stop and realize just one simple thing...How many times have you been shot at, at close range....something to think about..!!

Posted by angie at November 29, 2003 8:50 PM

I am totally amazed at how much anger pervades our society. I worked at a youth facility for over 6 years and to watch our society turn a blind eye to the problems with families, drugs, abuse, neglect, it is sickening and makes me realize how hypocritical and superficial America can be.

There are thousands, perhaps millions, of Columbine Killer potentials out there. I am 33 years old and can remeber everyone who did me wrong while I was in high school. Here's the thing....

The world changes after high school, people!! Lives get better and worse, and everything from the past gets left behind. Nothing is that important.

The guys who created Southpark went to Columbine. I am sure they were a lot like the Dylan and Eric. The difference is they took their anger, their rejection, and created a show that has made them famously wealthy. Ask them if they care about being picked on in high school.

Everyone has anger. What separates us from the beasts is the fact that we can control and channel it. STOP HATING!!

Posted by commando at December 3, 2003 5:46 PM

whatever. why would you all come on to a site about remembering the tragedy at columbine and talk about how you're gonna go crazy and kill people at your school? what is the matter with you sick freaks?! what could have possible driven you to feel like the only way out is to kill your friends and family? I used to get bullied all the time, look at me... im totally okay and i feel like i could care less what people think of me. Suicide is one of the most selfish things to do. all you care about is yourself and how people dont "accept" you for who you are. This is all dylan and erics fault. They were too self concience about it all. They felt like shit so they took it out on innocent people. They didn't fit in so they took their issues out on the students. i can't even imagine what it must have been like for those who witnessed it all, and the families and friends... my heart goes all out for you.

I've felt like it, how I could just... blow everything up.. To reach a place where I felt okay, safe. I can see WHY they did it.. I can't see HOW. I have been so close to the edge so many times I can't count. But always it'sthe thought of how my family and friends would be affected that stops me. To have a hate that is more powerful than any relationship. hope. or future is unthinkable.

But then I think too that nothing is going to get better. There is always a struggle. This horrible battle to stay alive, make money, be intelligent, have kids, NEVER DO ANYTHING WRONG. And still there is no solace in death, no guarantee that it's gonna be better. No place to turn to for it all to end.. bust a waste of nothing and everything. What is the point to life? we inevitably die. And then what? Yes, heaven. But that can't be proven. And reincarnation? If we are reincarnated, I think it would be a tragedy. There's is just no point to anything...

Hey, Im from Australia, Gun's aren't as widely available here as they are In america, and Gun's aren't portrayed as being symbols of safety, and how many gun shootings do you hear of here?, maybe we should just have less fucking guns!
and more fucking, and smoke more weed, george bush needs to get some bush!!!!

Hey, First of all I would just like to say that this incident has deeply touched me...And another thing would be how people are leaving such rude and immature comments...Its like you dont even care about the feeling of those who were truly affected by the incident..I give my blessings to those who were lost, and those who were hurt in any way...I pray nothing like this ever has to happen again, for the world is truly getting worse...

Posted by guardianangel at March 15, 2004 9:53 PM

To uproot who plans on shooting up a school in Florida, Just a little advice, you should learn how to spell WEAPONS before you learn how to shoot them otherwise you might get hurt killing other people. But then again, you lack education thats why you're jelous that people other than yourself and your little G-force crew have an education and you want to take that away from them. Does your mommy know how sick and demented you are?...just curious. Go to bed little boy..it's past your bed time!!

I had forgotten that this was the fifth anniversary of Columbine this week, and then was reminded by the media coverage. One of the best things people can do to remember the victims is to make a positive influence in other's lives. And, once someone has children to teach them how to treat other humans. This is obviously a huge step that was missed in the killer's lives. Unfortunately for Columbine and the families of the victims, they were in the wrong place at the wrong time with two of the top 10 cowards of all time. God bless you Columbine tragedy vistims and families.

Posted by j philbin at April 21, 2004 4:14 PM

There is an obvious question to be asked after all that at Columbine, what moved these two kids to plan to massacre their fellow classmates? Being bullied and hazed by "jocks" was one such possibility. Frankly if that is true, I admire those two notoriously imortal heroes that finaly took out a few of those over-steroided, egotistical, territorial, self-centered ass wipes and put them in their place...six feet under. Long live the memory of Dylan and Eric! Fuck all you Jock assholes.
