Preppy Murderer Back in Media's Crosshairs
This Friday brings about an event that the New York media lives for: the release from prison of Robert Chambers, the "Preppy Murderer" who served 15 years for killing 18-year-old Jennifer Levin in Central Park in 1986.

Levin was found dead in the early morning, with red marks around her throat and various cuts and bruises. Her mini-skirt had been pushed up to her waist. Her bra and shirt were pushed up to her neck. Her panties found 50 feet away. An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be strangulation.

She had been seen the previous night leaving Dorrian's Red Hand, a popular preppy hangout on Manhattan's Upper East Side, with Robert Chambers, a good-looking 21-year-old bad boy. When first questioned about the crime, Chambers blamed the scratches on his face to his cat and cuts on his hand to sanding floors. He then changed his story several times before introducing rough sex: Levin, he said, had tied him up and he couldn't get her to stop.

The case was as high-profile as any in the last quarter-century of New York crime, right up there with the trials of John Gotti and Bernhard Goetz, both of whom were featured on the cover of TIME magazine. (Gotti cover | Goetz cover.) It had all the ingredients needed to salivate the public: sex, money, good looks and murder. If it sounds like a made-for-TV movie, it's because it was made into a TV movie (1989), starring Billy Baldwin and Lara Flynn Boyle. Why anyone watches TV movies about real events, I'll never know, but we'll discuss middle America in another post.

Defense attorney Jack Litman contended than Levin's death was a case of rough sex gone bad, that Chambers had accidentally killed her in an instinctive act of self-defense after she grabbed him in a way that caused him great pain. The case achieved national notoriety when Chambers' defense team delivered a ruthless blame-the-victim argument, attempting to bring into evidence Levin's sexual history from her diary, which is just as irrelevant today as it was then. Levin was painted as woman who had such an insatiable sexual appetite that 6-4 men must resort to murder to release themselves from her grip. The Village Voice published an article titled "Who’s On Trial?" But if O.J.'s playing golf these days, I guess some people will believe anything, and prosecutors agreed to a plea bargain that guaranteed jail time and erased the risk of a hung jury.

Chambers, for his part, has served more than four years of his prison sentence in solitary confinement for 27 serious offenses involving drugs, violence and smuggling. Sources told the New York Post that he is leaving with a drug problem and that it's almost a guarantee that he will be back in prison. Levin, meanwhile, remains dead; her family soon to be haunted again.

That is rather scary...

The bar where Chambers and Levin met, Dorian's, is still open. When I moved to NYC in 1991, my friend Larry, who lives around the corner from it, took me there and told me the story. It still has the same crowd, upper class, prep schoolers, all-white. But now the nickname is the Dead Hand, not Red Hand. If you go there, you can see just how short a walk it is from Dorian's to Central Park, where he killed her behind the Met. It's also on one of those true-crime NYC walking tours.

Chambers should rot in jail.

i just read an article by Jennifer's older sister on Chamber's upcoming release from prison, and it's bone chilling to think that he will be getting out of prison, so soon. and what is up with this drug problem? i must be seriously naive to how prisons work.

but, you're right...when you think about OJ playing golf, why would ANYONE be surprised, anymore.

This will be all over the national news this week. The victim's mother is beloved by the media here; she started a victim's rights group. I'm sure there will be all kinds of stories about this guy getting out.

But just wait until the Central Park Jogger Five get sprung -- that'll be a bigger media circus.

Chambers served the maximum time his sentence allowed. As there is no way in my mind that he intended to kill her that evening (no motive whatsoever), 15 years is a fair manslaughter sentence.

The public seems to believe that all criminals should go to jail and never be released. Chambers paid his debt to society. He best be left alone.

Robert Chambers served his time. Leave him alone. From what I have read and saw in the movie, I'm still not convinced that the death of Jennifer was intentional. What was she doing chasing after a grown man anyway? Eventhough she didn't deserve to die, by all means I don't believe she was a saint. Some of her actions may have very well contributed to her death. She had a hand in her own death. That's what I believe. Chambers is still a very atractive man and looking at Jennifer's pictures, she was a plain Jane who probably herself knew it as well so when Attractive Chambers showed her a little attention she took it for more than what it was and ran with it. She probably threatened him or had something hanging over Chambers head and threatened to tell because of his constant rejections of her and in a panic he killed her.......Let this be a lesson to all women "When a man wants to be left Alone, Leave him Alone" Why would you want someone who clearly doesn't want you. Look at where it got Jennifer.

Camilia:

A.) You must never have seen the video of Chambers
ripping the head off a doll.

B.) I hope you don't become a victim like Jen and
have someone write the ridiculous statements
about you as you did with her.

C.) You must have very low self esteem to think
the way you do. Anyone of sound congnition
would not have.

It just amazes me that its not take a life and yours is taken, whether in jail or death sentence. I think that there are too many murderers and so forth running the streets now. It doesn't even seem like something to fight for anymore. Heck why not let him take our daughters out, let oj come over for dinner, and while were at it, how about we just let michael jackson babysitt for us. Some people are idiots...thank god I am not one of them, and I have more respect and care for myself and others.

He is a bum. From his comments about Blacks to the police; it is shocking he did not say Blacks had raped her, afterall, there was no DNA because he is gay!!!

Posted by Preppy at August 19, 2004 11:11 AM

Camilia, apparently you foolishly believe the absurd lies that Chambers and his attorney offered in his defense. You thus perpetuate the crime against the memory of Jennifer Levin. When will you and others like you realize that Chambers was no "preppie," and that he beat, raped, strangled and murdered Jennifer Levin after a fierce struggle? The contention that there was consensual "rough sex," or that Levin was the aggressor and Chamber had to defend himself against her, are both sick allegations made by the defense in the murder trial of Chambers. That version of the facts was never borne out by any evidence. In fact, the forensic evidence clearly pointed to a violent murder. Chambers is a remorseless sociopath, a drug abuser, a thief, a repeat offender, and above all, a murderer. He destroyed Jennifer Levin's life. Must you, even to this day, continue to destroy her reputation as well?

camilia, your comments are sick and ridiculous. he was 6 foot plus and 200 pounds. she was tiny. he killed her and then blamed her.

i'll bet you voted for Bush, you soulless, mindless ammoral freak.

Posted by bliss at January 22, 2005 3:53 AM

Bliss,

I agree with you wholeheartedly that Camilia's comments are completely ridiculous. However, your characterization of Camilia as a Bush-voter was way off base. Republicans are well-known (partisan wise) for being tough on crime and punishments. Republicans don't advocate a "blame the victim" mentality, but rather advocate more of a retributivist mentality...a.k.a. the mentality that a criminal should pay for their crime, no matter what the victim did. I think you are confused because Republicans prize morality and conservative values, which may lead you to believe that because a girl may have dressed or acted inappropriately, that she was immoral and deserved what she got. That however, is as misguided as Camilia's thinking. No matter what Jennifer did, she did not deserve to be murdered at the hands of that monster. I have voted for Bush (twice), and I can still say that.

Camilia, were you one of the jurors? How do you make judgement based on a hollywood movie? To further that, you actually place blood in the hands of the victim? She murdered herself with his hands because he's so damn good looking? Give me a break!

No way did she persue this guy the way he describes. More likely, he took her role in what actually happened, up until he killed her and had to reclaim his own role to explain his actions after he murdered her.

His story is that they were sitting on the park bench, and he was rejecting her advances (more likely: they were sitting on the park bench, and she rejected him); Next he describes her running off into the bushes behind the bench, upset at his rejection (more likely: He went into the bushes, angry at her rejection); Then he describes her sneeking up behind him and grabbing his arms and tying them behind his back with her panties (more likely: he snuck behind her and grabbed her by the neck, picked up and pulled her around to the ground where he assaulted, raped and killed her).

There is no way, I repeat NO WAY this girl grabbed this guy from behind and tied his arms up behind his back.

The prosecutor in this case was way over her head.

It's disgusting that our legal system allows the crumbs of society to walk all over our precious and innocent. I pray for the parents of the victim, that they may find peace in their hearts and minds, and somehow they find joy in their future.

People like Camilia have no brains at all. I suppose if she gets robbed she'll blame herself for being born a woman and having something to be robbed of. I am struggling not to insult her, but it's too difficult. She demonstrates the lowest iq possible while maintaining a heartbeat. Probably a woman rejected most of her life by the men in her life. I hope she finds real love and self esteem sometime in her life. Cleary she lacks it now.

As for Jennifer Levin, I know she was murdered by a hateful and ugly human being. I'm sure she's in a place reserved for good and righteous people, a place she will likely never run into Robert Chambers and people like him.

Peace and Justice are hers now, but here on Earth, we wait.

First off: Camilia, I know it's almost been two and half years after your post, and I hope that you are well. Your naive post makes me wonder if you have the capacity to interact in the world without being taken advantage of by the 'Robert Chambers'es of the world. Chambers is in everyway an opportunist that preys on the dimwitted to get his way.

Chambers has in no way repaid his debt -- all he did was serve the incredibly light sentence he was able to finagle from the state by blaming the victim. Thankfully, his criminal spirit (he was caught with drugs in prison)kept him from being released earlier on parole.

All the blame for Chambers's lack of remorse, however, cannot be placed on solely Chambers's shoulders. His mother, Phyllis Chambers obviously brought him up to believe that he was entitled to live outside of society's laws. She raised him to believe that he need not bear responsibility for his actions. Defense attorney Jack Litman fueled Chamber's warped world view and distorted public decency by blaming the victim, Jennifer Levin (Litman had used the same strategy in Bonnie Garland's murder years earlier).

Also, don't forget the owner and manager at Dorrian's -- they provided a place where it was possible for the victim and Chambers to drink illegally while underage. The owners of Dorrian's also paid part of Chambers's bail -- they obviously don't mind sending out the message that it's okay to commit violence against women. It should be noted that the same people also own "The Falls." Grad student Immettee St. Guillen was adbucted from "The Falls" and raped and killed by the bouncer at "The Falls" in 2005. In this most recent murder, the owners essentially obstructed the investigation, and may have given the bouncer enough time to destroy evidence.
