The World's Oldest Bottles of Salad Dressing
Along with directing lost tourists to gay bars, one of the best time-killers in New York is to play "Find the Oldest Thing in the Store." An advertising coworker taught me how to play back in 1994:

  1. Go to a bodega that derives 95% of its sales from cigarettes and beer
  2. Find cans and boxes of food no one buys, like Cream of Sum Yung Gai soup and powdered breast milk
  3. Find the copyright date on the package
  4. A good find ranges between 3-5 years old

It's a game that's simultaneously disgusting and entertaining. Kinda like watching "The Anna Nicole Show" or the latest Mets free-agent signing seeing his career implode.

Nothing I ever found could hold a candle to The World's Oldest Bottles of Salad Dressing, however. The label on the Russian Creamy Dressing from Seven Seas reads, "best when purchased before March 17, 1976." Shows you what they know. The label on the other bottle — like many of your 401(k) accounts — has disintegrated.

It's at times like this that I celebrate the Internet for all its randomness, and the police department for being nearby should I discover that people who keep 27-year-old bottles of salad dressing live close to me.

(Thanks to Joe for the link.)

The oldest - that's funny. We do the same thing but we look for aged red wine or Port. I did find the collector version of Baileys with little cups that are already in antique stores. There it was collecting dust. Score big time!

Like your writing style and humor. Oh, and to the right I see Guitar...off now to snoop around some more.

Ugh! Jen, I just saw your comment. Do you follow me...wait, I'm following you...nevermind. Somehow we land at the best sites together.

Paul, don't let us confuse you. We somehow find the best blogs. They should call Jen and me the blogfinders. We filter through the junk and land at places like yours. Thank you for letting me blog in your blog.

Yes, I do have a unique writing style. It's a cross between my two biggest influences, Shakespeare and Al Goldstein.

The guitar links to the right are mostly there to attract women. I've been playing for only a year and a half and can't play 95% of the stuff found on those sites, but who's gonna know?

Shit, now everyone knows.

Anyway, I can play a mean "Wanted Dead or Alive." Bon Jovi hoochies apply within.
