Review: Gin & Juice (Acoustic Version)
I'll never forget where I was when I first heard the words "Gin & Juice, the acoustic version." It was at the tail end of my buddy's bachelor party, and we had just arrived at Yogi's, a place on Broadway at 76 Street that's best described as a shithole, only it's not as clean.

We were almost oblivious to the fact that the jukebox was broken, because the four of us who didn't pass out already were laughing too hard at my friend, who was wearing Speedo goggles and being shot in the face with water from the buxom bartender who I once took back to my place in a state so drunken that I fell off the couch and rolled into my coffee table.

Moving on...

In walked a local musician who plays guitar at a nearby bar, and he had his six-string with him. We comanded him to play the bar's favorites — "You Never Even Called Me by My Name," "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw." That's when a drunken patron asked him, "Hey, do you know Gin & Juice, the acoustic version?"

Now I really thought I was going to die laughing. The patron asked if I knew "Gin & Juice."

"Know it?" I replied. "I live it."

Now we were all rolling, and lucky for us, it was only 3:30 a.m. Still more time to act like complete idiots in a town known for accomplisment.

And today, while pilfering songs from people's Kazaa libraries, I came across an .mp3 of "Gin & Juice" (yep, the acoustic version) as done by Dave Matthews Band. (Ed note: See comment for correction.)

I don't want to kill too much bandwith by posting this song on PK.com, but I'll be happy to e-mail it to anyone who requests it. I promise it's worth it.

And remember, G's up, Ho's down, while you motherfuckers bounce to this.

Lyrics to "Gin & Juice" (that I swear on Derek Jeter's life it begins with *man pissing*)

Comments: Review: Gin & Juice (Acoustic Version)

Gin and Juice is actually a cover by a band called the Gourds. They’re from Texas.

Read about it here:

http://indyweek.com/durham/2002-10-09/music.html

I was always under the impression it was Blues Traveler, but I was wrong. Consequently, I’m the same Brad that e-mailed you the translation to Jay-Z’s "Izzo."

Glad to see you’re back.

Fo shizzle,

-Brad

Also check out Phish's version. Not acoustic, but interesting.

Posted by Robert at December 27, 2002 9:13 AM

I was almost sure that I heard the Gourds did a cover and so did Phish with Blues Traveler and Dave Matthews Band...hmmm...I am an avid Dave fan so I know that he does stuff with both bands (Phish and Blues Traveler). I would like you to send me your version if you could to see if we have the same one, or if I'm just hearing made-up crap.

I would love it if you could please email me that song. I have Phish's version, but I'd love to hear the acoustic version.

Hi. Wondering if I could get you to email me that song? I collect gin and juice covers, i've also got a punk version, and the phish version. Thanks

Posted by b0z at May 28, 2003 5:20 PM

Could you send me a copy of "Gin and Juice"? I have heard that before, I believe by a Texas bluegrass band, but I would like to hear your version. Thank you.

Posted by Shalee at June 2, 2003 8:55 PM

the 'texas bluegrass band' was string cheese incident and Phish. and I fucking love that version of G & J fo' shizzle my nizzle

Could you send me the other version too.

Posted by travis at June 4, 2003 8:17 PM

Hey I was wondering if anyone has any other songs along the lines of the DMB Gin and Juice cover, sort of like Dynamite Hack doing Boyz in the Hood, I think they're hilarious and would like to hear others if anyone knows of any that are floating around, the only other one i've managed to find is Phish and Kid Rock doing Rappers Delight. Post some good ones, or email me with em, thanks a bunch.

Posted by Dave at July 22, 2003 3:28 AM

Phish has never covered the song "Gin and Juice." neither has Dave Matthews Band, String Cheese Incident, or Blues Traveler. That file is incorrectly labled on napster as being a Phish version, however, it is really a texas bluegrass band called "The Gourds." If you listen to the so called "phish" version, you will hear that it is not trey, nor any other memeber of phish, dmb, csi or blues traveler.

I believe you when you say it is the Gourds, but I also heard that there is a version of Blues Traveller with Dave Matthews. The version I have sounds very much like John Popper's voice with a very southern accent. I was convinced, but now I am interested in finding out the truth. Either way, this song is awesome! I love this freakin song. Every once in a while I just think "laid back" and I crack up. I would love to learn the song on the guitar. Do you have tabs? Do you know where I could find tabs for it? Its not at Olga.

Just a note - if anyone's ever been to Irish Kevin's on Duval Street in Key West - they perform this all the time and it's fantastic. If you've been there before, you know all the places to sing along - very cool experience! If you're in the Keys you oughta stop in.

I'd love to get a copy of that DMB cover, to compare it to the version I have! My friends and I have no idea who does it, we've all heard that the Gourd, Phish, and Rusted Root all do covers and we have no idea what to believe. Any Info would be greatly appreciated

Posted by Matt at October 7, 2003 11:49 PM

I'm new here. I was trying to prove to my wife that it was The Gourds and not Phish, and a web-search turned up this page.

For the people wanting tablature, this isnt tablature but it might help:
http://www.altcountrytab.com/gourds/gourds-ginandjuice.htm

And, this is from the phish.net FAQ at
http://www.phish.net/faq/ginandjuice.html

How can I hear Phish doing "Gin and Juice"?
This song has not been performed or recorded by the Vermont band Phish .

It was originally done by Dr. Dre, Snoop, and a NYC hip-hop artist named Phish, and has been covered by a bluegrass band from Texas called the Gourds. The latter circulates on MP3, and is sometimes incorrectly labelled as by Phish.

The hip-hop artist "Phish" is also featured on backup vocals for Dre's "What's the Difference" (track 7 on Dr. Dre 2001 - a title as remarkably unoriginal as using the name Phish nearly two decades after the band started to).

must we forget about the berlin project?

Posted by kody at October 26, 2003 6:53 PM

Hey guys. O.K.- The acoustic version of Gin and Juice is done by "The Gourds", not Phish or Dave Matthews. Somehow people had mislabeled it on the web. It is on the cd "Gogetyershinebox" (fun title, hey?) by the Gourds.

Posted by Mike at October 30, 2003 6:27 PM

Why did The Gourds copy DMB and Blues Traveler? How many times does one hit have to be covered?

Posted by Dan at November 11, 2003 10:59 AM

Hey everyone, first, I would love to get the acoustic version e-mailed to me. Thanks!!

My wife played the acoustic version of G & J a few months ago and I can't get enough of it. She too was under the impression that is was Phish. I was searching for the tablature today and came across the Phish.net Q&A page. I'm not a big Phish fan so it doesn't bother me either way. The song is still kick-ass!

P.S. I found some tab here:

http://www.altcountrytab.com/gourds/gourds-ginandjuice.htm

I live in Austin TX (where the Gourds are from) and have been seeing the band play for years. Trust me on this, the cover of Gin n' Juice is the Gourds and has only EVER been the Gourds. The only reason anyone ever thought it was Phish, DMB, Blues Traveler, etc. is because of mislabeling on Napster years ago. The Gourds have been performing this live for a long while - the studio version was originally recorded in 1997.

Kevin Russell, who sings on the track, had always liked the song and wanted to cover it for his own amusement. He worked it up for a local songwriter's circle to see what kind of reaction the folkies would give him. It went over big. The rest is history.

If you want tabs, it ain't that hard. It's just A and D.

The band will be touring a lot this summer. Go see them - tour schedule is at http://www.thegourds.com
You won't regret it....

Ahahaha, I got for y'all. I downloaded the song off of WinMX, with the filename "Travis Tritt, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks - Gin N Juice." The title on WinAmp shows up as "Phish..." Of course the song is sung by neither. It's not Travis Tritt, who I was excitedly hoping for it to be, but it's still awesome.

i stand corrected, you're saying it was the gourds.....whichever, i could really use the chords.

Posted by mailman at May 6, 2004 2:23 PM

Mailman... Read a little closer. People already posted a link to the chords, which are A and D.

The link is: http://www.altcountrytab.com/gourds/gourds-ginandjuice.htm

I'm just going to reiterate this for anyone else who jumps on this board saying the cover is performed by Phish, Rusted Root, Blues Traveler, Travis Tritt & Company, Leftover Salmon, String Cheese Incident, Kid Rock, or Dave Matthews Band accompanied by all of these artists on stage (or in the studio) at the same time. If you have an acoustic bluegrass cover of Gin and Juice, and the singer(s) has a clear, southern voice that hits all of the notes with precision, then the song you are listening to is a cover by THE GOURDS. LET ME REPEAT THAT.

THE GIN AND JUICE COVER YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED IS PERFORMED BY A TEXAS BLUEGRASS BAND NAMED THE GOURDS!

The reason people mislabeled it was because no one really knows who The Gourds are, so someone attached the name of a band that they know and like, partially because it sounded like that band, but mostly because people are narrow minded creatures that are scared of the unknown. In other words, it was much more comfortable for oneself and for others to say it was Phish etc. Following this original and inevitable mislabeling, many people downloaded it while searching for Phish, or String Cheese, or DMB, or whatever band it started with. This is the ironic part. If no one had ever mislabeled it in the first place, then would any of us ever heard the cover? I suppose we should be grateful for having heard it, and I should be grateful for the opportunity to write this long, convoluted rant that will never matter. Maybe the song would have experienced a high rate of download strictly on the strength of the song name "Gin and Juice" without a mislabeled band name, but that possibility is open to further research, reflection, and discussion. Anyways, where was I? Oh yes, consequently the band name was changed numerous times by people who could tell the original name was wrong, but didn't want to do any research to find out who it actually was performed by, thereby repeating the cycle.

I stumbled upon this website searching for the true band myself. Thank you to the people who posted with the correct info. I hope to see the Gourds in the future now, they sound hot!

I AM GOING TO CLEAR THE CONFUSION . . . THIS SONG IS ACTUALLY PLAYED BY THE SOGGY BOTTOM BOYS AND SUNG BY ERNEST P WORELL . . . CHECK WIKIDPEDIA PEOPLE !!! RUMOR HAS IT THEY CHANGED NAMES FOR COPYRIGHT REASONS

Posted by penenvelopec at February 26, 2006 1:31 PM

People are still not getting this. Dave Mathews has NEVER done a cover of Gin and Juice. Soggy Bottom Boys have NEVER done a cover of Gin and Juice. Suggesting they changed the name for copyright reasons is just silly. The Gourds started playing it back in 97, and put it on an album in 2000. (And Snoop loved it BTW...)

There may NOW be other bluegrass bands that have done a cover of it, but if so they are covering the cover done by The Gourds. If Soggy Bottom Boys ever do this song (which they have not) they will be following in the footsteps of the Gourds. And they will be doing so ten years after the fact...

Posted by Mystyplx at March 22, 2006 8:43 PM

To reiterate:

If you found a bluegrass cover of Gin and Juice on the internet it is 99.9999999% that it is the Gourds. That mp3 spread far and wide and was renamed just all sorts of things.... but its all the same song recorded by The Gourds.

I should note there are two versions out there, one studio and one live. BOTH by The Gourds. Both versions are accoustic and odds are 90+% the one you have or have heard is the studio version, because that's the one that exploded on Napster and started getting mislabeled. The live version is more likely to have the artist tag list "The Gourds" the studio version is more likely to list almost anything else other than the Gourds as the artist, DMB, SBB, Phish, Travis Tritt, Salmon, or tons of other misnamings. But the Gourds are the first band to do a bluegrass version of this song and their version is still BY FAR the most common one you'll find.

Additional note: There is a hip-hop cover done by a NY city rapper called... Phish. You'll immediately know the difference if you get that one. It's hip-hop, not bluegrass. There are no banjos in that one.

Rant completed.

Gin and Juice is definately by the Austin TX alt country band, "THE GOURDS". As a matter of fact, they will be in NYC at the Mercury Lounge on June 21st and they usually end their set with Gin and Juice. I may be in NYC that week and will definately go to the show. I live in Austin currently and I love this band. On their website, there is actually a video of Snoop Dogg rocking out to the song and singing along -

Here's a couple youtube videos of live covers of 'the gourds' doing the song. To be honest, (TO BE HONEST, THE GOURDS DO NOT SOUND LIKE THEY'RE THE ONES who sing the copy I've got, which is said to be performed by DMB.) Just because The Gourds have covered the song doesn't mean The Dave Matthews Band didn't do the version that is so popular. For one thing, The Gourds sing it ALOT faster than the DMB cover. And they don't sound like they're the ones.

Just go to YouTube.com and type gin and juice into their search bar. You'll come up with multiple versions of the song and see it too.

Also, google 'who sings gin & juice' and see what you come up with . . .

Nutty

Posted by nuttybird2000 at July 6, 2007 4:17 PM

But seeing as how I cannot find a video of G&J by either DMB or Phish, I will have to concede that it was performed by The Gourds.

Posted by nuttybird2000 at July 6, 2007 4:20 PM

Hi

You'll be pleased to know that, to further confuse the issue, someone has posted 'Gin and Juice' on Frostwire (a music sharing site) stating it is by the Barenaked Ladies!!!
