World Trade Center Design Proposals Released
A quick AP photo search reveals all of the proposed designs for rebuilding the World Trade Center.

They all look so futuristic and symbolic, and I'm not sure that any feel right to me. I suppose if I had to choose, this Peterson/Littenberg creation seems to fit New York best.

I visited Ground Zero for perhaps the fourth time last week, and many of the impromptu memorials and gifts from around the world simply have not been altered. I took plenty of pictures of downtown NYC and felt as I have for most of the time since: a profound sadness for those lost and a renewed sense of humanity among most Americans. Not to be forgotten are the survivors and rescue workers who saw things that will remain in their memories forever. We cannot forget our responsibilities to them, either.

But what I thought most as I walked around that now-solemn area was that, on that horrific morning, people ran for their lives. I envisioned the chaos that ensued in the very positions in which I stood, and it was very powerful.

Comments: World Trade Center Design Proposals Released

Here is a link to CNN readers proposals on what the news World Trade Center should look like. They dont list the age of who made these, and while its obvious that many were children, you can't help but wonder about some of the others.

I'm not putting my money on the 12-story "apple" building. You have to smile at the innocence, though, of some of the ideas.

I don't know people are coming up with these Jetsons-like structures. I'd rather see something classic, something strong.

It will be odd to see something unavoidable in terms of a 9/11 reminder. Now the reminders are mostly by chance: happen to pass by a fire department, maybe spot a rescue worker's hard hat hanging in a bar.

When the World Trade Center is rebuilt, it's going to be a long, long time before someone can see it without thinking of 9/11, and the structure needs to be able to accomodate that.

As I've said before, the building(s) should dominate the NY skyline again, but I'd like to see the ground levels be equal parts respectful memorial and marketplace for freedom, like a cultural bazaar.
